Overview With the lack of an equivalent in SQL2005 or SQL 2008 for the SQL Server Service Manager that comes with SQL2000, I've decided to write one myself. It's behaviour should be familiar to you if you've used SQL2000. If you have suggestions or want to report a bug email smbugs or you can use the feedback mechanisms on the associated SQL 2005 Service Manager Codeplex site where the full source code is also available. ** Update August 2007 ** If you are running Windows Vista, there is a new version available specifically designed for Vista and UAC (User Account Control) requirements. This Vista version enables the tool to run without administrative privileges by using a helper windows service to perform actions that require administrative rights on behalf of the client. There is no new functionality in this version so existing users running Windows XP/2003 do not need to download this new version. Only Vista users require it. As new functionality is incorporated into the tool it will be added to both versions. ** Update August 2008 ** SQL 2005 Service Manager is now fully compatible with SQL Server 2008 however the name will remain the same.
Using SQL2005 Service Manager To use SQL2005 Service Manager simply unzip the downloaded file into a folder and double click on SQL2005 Service Manager Setup.msi to install. For the Windows Vista version, please read the Install Instructions in the zip file and ensure the SQLServiceManager service is started before using the application. The behaviour of SQL2005 Service Manager is very similar to that of the SQL Server Service Manager that is part of Microsoft SQL Server 2000, one exception being that it will always start minimized in the system tray. Another is that the tool only manages local instances. The system tray icon has a right click menu allowing service and instance selection and control of the currently selected service. Double clicking on the icon or choosing Open SQL2005 Service Manager from the menu will bring up the familiar user interface allowing instance and service selection and control of the selected service. The installer adds a shortcut to your Startup folder so if you don't want it to start automatically simply delete the shortcut.
